The Ahmedabad police on Wednesday lodged an FIR against Dalit activist Jignesh Mevani and others for alleged rioting, unlawful assembly, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty, disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant and damaging public properties among other charges.
The move comes days before Mevani and others decided to hold “rail roko” agitation from October 1, seeking land for the Dalits. Others who have been named in the FIR are Amrish Patel, Bharatsinh Jhala, Manabhai Pateliya, Ramesh Baria, Mukesh Patel and others.

Police cited Mevani-led protest of safai workers outside the AMC headquarters on September 26 as one of the reasons for filing the FIR. They said the protest was held without permission from police.
