A BJP supporter opened fire from his air gun at the victory rally of BJP councillor in Surat’s Kansad area after the results of nagarpalika elections were declared on Tuesday afternoon. The BJP swept the Kanakpur-Kansad nagarpalika election by winning 27 out of 28 seats in seven wards. Senior BJP leaders, MLAs, MPs and other party workers gathered at the BJP office at Kansad near Swaminarayan temple to participate in the felicitation programme of the winning candidates.

All 27 candidates turned up at the BJP office at Kansad with their supporters and musical band. Among them was Arjunsinh Rajput, who won from ward no. 7. One of Rajput’s supporters took out a gun and fired one round in the air, dancing to the tune of Bollywood songs. Sources said that some BJP MLAs scolded the supporter for opening fire.

This also allegedly angered senior party leader Bharatsinh Parmar, who is believed to have immediately left the spot after firing.

The firing, however, was shot by someone on mobile phone and circulated on WhatsApp groups. Sachin police inspector M H Shaikh said, “We have identified the person. His name is Mehul Patil. He works at a textile firm. We are questioning him to find out more information.”
