Government moves to double MPs’ salary to Rs 2.8 lakh a month, hike pensions

The proposal, currently with the Finance Ministry, also suggests that basic pension should be raised from Rs 20,000 per month to Rs 35,000.

winter session, parliament session, parliament swinter session, lok sabha, lok sabha quorum, lok sabha adjourned, india news, latest news, parliament news, The government has proposed increasing the monthly salary of an MP from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh, constituency allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000 and secretarial assistance plus office allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000.

The central government seems set to double the salaries and allowances of Parliamentarians. If a proposal in this regard is approved by the Finance Ministry, every MP will get Rs 2.8 lakh per month. Their pension, too, will see a jump.

The government has proposed increasing the monthly salary of an MP from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh, constituency allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000 and secretarial assistance plus office allowance from Rs 45,000 to Rs 90,000.

The proposal, currently with the Finance Ministry, also suggests that basic pension should be raised from Rs 20,000 per month to Rs 35,000. Those who have served for more than five years would get an additional amount — the number of years multiplied by Rs 2,000. Currently, the additional amount is the number of years multiplied by Rs 1,500.

If the Finance Ministry agrees to allocate the amount, Parliament will amend the Salary, Allowance and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Bill to incorporate the changes, sources said. “The ministry is expected to accept the proposals,” said a top government official.

The Finance Minister had allocated Rs 295.25 crore for Lok Sabha MPs and Rs 121.96 crore for Rajya Sabha MPs — which includes expenses such as travel — in his last budget.

The ministry has also agreed to the recommendations of the Joint Committee on Members’ Salary and Allowance regarding an increase in car loan and furniture allowance for MPs. The committee had suggested that the Rs 4 lakh car loan given to MPs should be increased. “It could be increased to an amount that is recoverable from MPs in five years,” said the source. Once the proposals, prepared by the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, are implemented, wages of MPs will be higher than the government secretary’s salary.

The government, however, has decided not to agree to some other recommendations of the Joint Committee. “The government does not want to pamper the egos of Parliamentarians, but wants them to be adequately paid. The new salaries should take care of inflation too,” added the source.

The ministry decided to reject demands by the Joint Committee, headed by BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, to relax norms in amenities for MPs and former members. There were proposals to provide housing loans for MPs, special guest houses in all constituencies, housing societies, exemption from payment at toll plazas and canteen facilities along the lines of what armed forces personnel are entitled to. There was also a recommendation to increase their daily allowance from Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000, which has not been accepted.

It should be increased further also. So that 1. young graduates should not shy away to get into politics. 2. At least some existing MP's should start thinking that the ry is good enough. Don't need to indulge in any corruption and do some genuine service to people. I Strongly support further increase of the ry and make it a decent profession for service.

Rohit you are getting irritated about the ry... but these are the people elected by people to make decisions on budget which runs in thousands of trillions of rupees. They make decisions of life the people of the country.... we need to be careful about sending them to parliament. Educated young people should join politics to do service to nation like they do it to corporate world.

Politicians of each and every parties will unite for increasing their ry. Nobody will oppose it. In this matter only every politicians are " Bhai - Bhai". Now they are getting Rs.140000/- per month in addition to free acommodation, water and electicity, free pes in trains and flights free usage of telephone, free foreign trips, and earning crores of rupees illeagally. Where they are spending their own money? For what expenditure they demand double and three fold ry hike? They are also getting special allowence for attending the parliament session. What they are doing there? Most of them waste time and public money. Some of the are busy in investigation regarding other MPs and ministers profile / their education / date of birth / family history etc. They are demanding increased ry for this type of third cl work. SHAME !!

I am yet to see even one of those BJP 'regulars' here commenting on "Khangress" and "Sikularist" on this article. HOW to stretch and twist this piece of great news to put blame and abuse on "Khangress" and "Sikularist" and "Khujli", Nitish and Lalu. I tried to do myself, but failed. We have to wait for them to come back.

These members of parliament of India do not deserve any increase in ry. What good they have done to people? They get all sorts of discounts , free train tickets and free telephones. The average age of these people is more than 60. They sleep or fight during proceedings in parliament. They do not vacate their official residences even after they cease to be members of parliament .

Very disappointing decision made by BJP govt. Why are you increasing ry of those people who already have pockets filled. You are not giving pension to govt employees who worked around 30 years for government. But giving pension to MPs who mostly worked for 5 years.

All Our MPs will agree for the increase. How nice it would be if they show similar concern towards their duty and responsibility while discussing important bills inside the house.

The MP's may need an increase in ry but like in other occupations it should be linked to their presence and productivity in the house.
