Gangster-turned-politician Jaswinder Singh aka ‘Rocky,’ 50, was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Panchkula-Shimla national highway Saturday. Police suspect the incident is the fallout of a gang war.
According to preliminary probe, Rocky and his driver were travelling from Himachal Pradesh to Chandigarh. Around 9.45 am, at least two armed men opened fire at his SUV at a traffic signal in Parwanoo, Haryana.
While Rocky died on the spot, his driver Parampal Singh suffered serious injuries. Parampal was rushed to PGIMER, Chandigarh, and is stable, said police.
Rocky, who was facing several criminal cases, had unsuccessfully contested the 2012 Punjab polls as an Independent candidate from Fazilka.

IGP (South), Himachal Pradesh, Zahoor Haider Zaidi told The Sunday Express, “SP (Solan) Anjum Ara visited the spot. We are coordinating with Punjab Police. The assailants will be nabbed soon.”
According to Punjab Intelligence officials, Rocky’s aide and driver Parampal Singh has given them a lead regarding the assailants. “He has said the assailants were gang members of Jaipal and Tirath, who are wanted in several cases,” an intelligence official said, adding that Jaipal allegedly heads a gang of highway robbers and is wanted in many states.
“Jaipal, who hails from Ferozepur, is presently at large. He had an old enmity with Rocky. It is a case of gang war. Palla added that Rocky was under threat to his life from the Jaipal and Tirath gangs,” said a senior Himachal Pradesh police officer.
Rocky had been allegedly associated with many senior politicians of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. He had hit the headlines in 2008 when his name cropped up in connection with the alleged murder of another gangster, Prabhjinder Singh Dimpy, outside Lake Club in Chandigarh.
