Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday announced free bus travel for senior citizens in Chennai metropolitan area from her 68th birthday on February 24.

Making the announcement in the state assembly, she asserted that with this the AIADMK government has fulfilled “all the electoral promises” made by the party in 2011 in the state, which is set to go to polls in barely three months.

“We had made a poll promise in our election manifesto that senior citizens would be provided free bus passes…I am happy to say that with this announcement we have fulfilled all the promises made in the AIADMK’s election manifesto in 2011,” she said.

The free travel, with a cap of ten journeys in a month, is the latest in the series of freebies implemented by the AIADMK regime such as cost-free milch cows, sheep, mixers, grinders and fans and laptop for students.

“I am also very happy to say that besides fulfilling all our electoral promises, we have also implemented various other welfare schemes,” she said amid thunderous applause from ruling party legislators and allies.

She said in the first phase, the scheme for free travel for senior citizens would be implemented in the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses in Chennai.

Under the plan, elderly people over the age of 60 may travel in all the MTC buses barring air-conditioned buses. The beneficiaries would be given ten tokens per month and they could give it to conductors in buses and travel free of cost.

“The scheme envisaging free travel for senior citizens in Chennai Metropolitan Corporation buses will be implemented from February 24 and after eliciting people’s response it will be extended to other places,” she said.

Those willing to avail the scheme should fill in an application form and submit it to transport authorities and get an identity card and tokens for travel. The forms could be obtained from transport corporation depots and transport department website, she said.

There is no deadline to submit application forms and these can be presented at the transport corporation bus depots any time, she said.

Soon after she made the announcement, eight legislators, Transport Minister P Thangamani and Speaker Dhanapal praised and thanked her for the new initiative.

Try not to demand apportion card for getting free transport goes since I don't hold proportion card and don't get any proportion articles even in my past habitation at Bangalore. Sympathetically issue amended requests to empower us to get free transport goes with no confinement on number of excursions. visit -

If it is really implemented for the welfare of the senior citizens , then it was not implemented immediately after they won election?. or atleast in the next year or 2 it should have been implemented. Now it is implemented to get votes for the upcoming election. AIADMK is still cheating people with all freebies and people do not realize this.. Shame on this government.

Some of our Senior Citizen peoples are working after their retirement in and around chennai. (age 60 and above ). They are getting Bus P for Rs.1000/=P.M for their transport to go their job. They are spending more in their age. SO I SUGGEST TO OUR HONOURABLE CHIEF MINISTER TO GIVE THE PRIVILAGE FOR 50% ON RS.1000/= BUS P.(MONTHLY)

This is ridiculous that Tamil Nadu Government is giving almost all everything is free, previously they have given fans, stoves, mixer grinders etc, with this kind of gifts makes the person lazy when it comes to the work, also from where the government getting money to distribute all this. stop giving free things and make the people to work and earn everything. make things affordable to everyone by reducing the taxes, that is enough and provide the work.

but for this month when i went to saidapet bus stand, the person who was near the bus stand shouted at me telling that he is not responsible for my reasonable questions out of which i wish to have my bus tickets for 10 trips. the person is thinking too much of himself as if he is giving the same to elderly people out of his pocket. this kind of people should not be encouraged.

The scheme welcomed. The no of trip restriction to be removed and the filling of application form that may be creates unnecessary problems, who not able to read and write. by this way work load /paper less implemented. For age proof Voter ID / ADHAR card is enough it also carrying dated of birth and address proof. Let the Authorities decided the right one

If DTC offers free pes to the senior citizens, that is also wrong by the Govt there and that cannot justify Jayalalitha's bus fare freebies to the senior citizens.ifa political leader or a party declares freebies to the people after uming power, it can be at least accommodated as a sincerity to senior citizens or to low income group people! But, a political party announcing such freebies as their election manifesto in order to capture power for their personal gains or political edge over their rivals to win elections at the cost of the people's tax payers' money, it is no different from bribing the people by draining the government's exchequer. If Jayalalitha were so sincere to the senior citizens, why didn't she do it in the past 5 years when she has been in power? No political party has a right to rob the tax payers' money to spend it for winning their elections as they are meant only for people's development schemes, programmes and projects! The Supreme Court in India should ban such a corrupt practice by the political parties under the law of corruption.

Jayalalitha thinks about only recapturing her power again by bankrupting he Govt's exchequer. I'm senior citizen who will stand to gain, but I won't like to use such a facility as a responsible citizen. In order to win elections and clawing back to power, both Jayalalitha and Karunanidhi are robbing the Govt's exchequer and the tax payers' money. If they want give freebies to the public to earn their power to be at the ruling, let them freebies to public from their own personal bank accounts and from the Govt's exchequer which is public money.

Great move! At least for the sake of the fact that we are paying 60% to 80% of ries in various forms of direct and indirect taxes Laptops for school children, cycles, books, mixies and grinders were not given for free. Remember the tax you and me are paying

Ten journey per month which will not be sufficient for aged peoples. The regular aged-working people should bought their monthly p which is mandatory. This scheme will not works for them. If it would be announced for a month which would be highly appreciated.

Did senior citizens demand free bus service? Why the profligacy? Yet another head of public expenditure wasted, like free mixee grinder, fan etc. People need good roads that do not wear off in six months and one monsoon, sewage disposal, drain water purification, good drinking water, free education up to year 12,free mid-day meal for school goers particularly poor children, rural roads to facilitate school children to attend schools without interruption, better sanitation infrastructure. Is there no body to give good advice?

Do not insist on ration card for getting free bus pes since I do not hold ration card and do not receive any ration articles even in my previous residence at Bangalore. Kindly issue revised orders to enable us to get free bus pes without any restriction on number of journeys.

I thank CM for the announcement even though very late. Better late than never. I have shifted from Bangalore recently. I am not having Ration card. I have to apply for it as it seems necessary for all purposes here. Since I am not having Ration Card, I was denied Bus p. Even after showing my Aadhar Card and address proof, they refused to use their discretion and see the genuineness of the request. In Delhi only address proof is necessary to get bus p. Probably because of limited number of trips ,this requirement of ration card was insisted. I hope the Govt. will issue revised orders to enable all sr. citizens get this facility w2ithout insisting on the ration.
