Four trucks filled with 30 cows were stopped by locals, who suspected the cows were en route to a slaughterhouse, near Thane’s Hiranandani area on Friday. Police said the animals were being transported from Gujarat to Kolhapur and were passing by Thane’s Ghodbundar road.

“Locals became suspicious and contacted the police. They suspected the cows were being transported to be slaughtered. We contacted the animal hospital who are preparing a report on the injuries sustained by the cows,” said a police officer at Kasarvadavli police station.

An officer said that one of the truck drivers in his statement to the police claimed that the cows from Gujarat yield better milk and were hence being delivered to a Kolhapur-based farmer. No case has been registered with the Thane police.
