Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnore district remained tense on Friday after three Muslim men were killed in clashes over the alleged harassment of girls from a village in the area, police said.
Police said the clashes erupted following allegations that some girls from Paida village were stopped and harassed when they were on their way to school on Friday morning.
Police said the girl’s relatives reached the spot, following which there was stone pelting and gunfire in the area.
“Three youths were killed in the clashes while a fourth, who is yet to be identified, is in coma,” said SP, Rural, Dharamveer Singh, adding that two of the dead were brothers.
Five people — all from the Jat community — have been arrested so far, police said. At least a dozen people were injured in the clashes; many of them being taken to Meerut for treatment. Security forces from five nearby police stations along with the Provincial Armed Constabulary were called in to bring the situation under control.
DIG, Moradabad, Omar Singh; ADG, Law and Order, Daljeet Chaudhary; and principal secretary, Home, Debashish Panda reached the spot as angry relatives put the bodies of the men on the national highway and blocked traffic.
Chaudhary said three people were confirmed dead and seven villagers had been detained for questioning. A constable and a sub-inspector posted at Paida police post have been suspended.
“The situation is under control. Police and PAC have been deployed in the village and arrests are being made. Some people are critical at the hospital. We will update,” he said.
