Former Chief Minister Madhu Koda on Sunday lodged an FIR at Lalpur police station in Ranchi alleging threat calls and demand of Rs 20 lakh as extortion money. However, initial investigations suggested that the accused person, known to Koda, sought to apologise to the former chief minister. The Ranchi police are in touch with him and he may appear before them on Wednesday. For the time being, security has been alerted around Koda’s residence as a matter of precaution.

According to the police, Koda lodged an FIR alleging that one Deepak Jaiswal, a resident of Bhubaneshwar, called him on Saturday evening and demanded Rs 20 lakh, failing which his child might be kidnapped. The police took up investigations and got in touch with the caller, who told them that he had already sought apology from the former CM.

“The person is known to the former CM. So far, it is clear that it was not a handiwork of any professional gang. Further investigations are on,” said Deputy Inspector General (Ranchi).

Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar said: “The person has told us that, in his SMS sent on Sunday morning, he apologised to the CM saying that he was under the influence of alcohol. However, he has denied extending any threat or making any demand for extortion money. We are in constant touch with him. It is clear that it is not a case of professional gang at work. Already, the former CM is provided with security as per his designation. We have increased the vigil as a matter of precaution.”
