A special fast-track court in New Delhi on Thursday sentenced Mahmood Farooqui to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a 30-year-old American scholar from Columbia University at his house last year. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain awarded the minimum sentence of seven years to the filmmaker, earlier held guilty under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC. Farooqui was co-director of the critically acclaimed movie ‘Peepli Live’.
The judge observed, “… it can be safely held, that the testimony of prosecutrix, being truthful and credible, can be relied upon as being sterling worth for the purpose of the conviction of the accused.”
Following is a chronology of events in a case involving co-director of Bollywood movie ‘Peepli Live’ Mahmood Farooqui, who was today sentenced to seven years jail by a Delhi court for raping a 30-year-old American researcher at his south Delhi residence in March 2015:
March 28, 2015: Friend receives text messages from victim, saying the accused had forced himself upon her.
Jun 20, 2015: Farooqui arrested for allegedly raping American researcher.
Jul 29: Police file charge sheet against Farooqui for the alleged offence punishable under sections 376 (rape).
Aug 9: Rape case against Farooqui sent to sessions court.

Aug 25: Researcher tells the court that a drunk Farooqui forced himself upon her after inviting her for dinner at his residence.
Aug 27: Cops oppose Farooqui’s bail plea, say it is a heinous crime.

Sep 9: Court starts day-to-day trial in rape case against Farooqui.
Sep 16: US researcher appears in court, reiterates allegations against Farooqui during in-camera proceedings.
