It happened in front of me, says ex-Army doctor whose family committed suicide

On the night of October 9, Sarkar said, his son Sameer, wife Anjana and his nephew’s wife Momita told him they did not want to live anymore, as Madhumita could send them to jail at any point.

Ten days after five members of his family were found dead in a flat in Ranchi, Dr Sukanto Sarkar has given his statement to Ranchi police, in the presence of a magistrate. Dr Sarkar has alleged that his family was forced to take the drastic step after being “traumatised by the constant threats of his daughter-in-law Madhumita Sarkar”. The former Army doctor also claimed that his family had visited a psychiatrist to cope with the alleged harassment, met lawyers and even filed a police complaint.

On the night of October 9, Sarkar said, his son Sameer, wife Anjana and his nephew’s wife Momita told him they did not want to live anymore, as Madhumita could send them to jail at any point. He claims he told them “they were choosing the wrong path”.

He said that Sameer and Anjana wrote a note and kept it on the dining table. Before midnight, Sameer injected his daughter Samita (with poison) and Momita did the same to her daughter Sumita. Anjana injected Sameer, Momita and herself, said Dr Sarkar.

“The entire incident happened before my eyes and I just sat there disappointed, disheartened,” Dr Sarkar told police. Anjana, Momita, Samita, Sumita and Sameer went to sleep, he said. Between 2-3 am, Dr Sarkar said, he “picked up a knife, stabbed himself in both his legs, slashed both his wrists and hit himself repeatedly in his chest and neck”. “I don’t know how I survived,” he told the magistrate.

According to the statement, the family arrived in Ranchi from Noida on October 6.

There, they visited a psychiatrist and met a lawyer to discuss the allegations made by their daughter-in-law. On the lawyer’s advice, they filed a complaint at a local police station on October 7.
