THANE police Monday arrested one more person in the Ephedrine drug bust case taking the total arrested to 11. The accused, identified as Sushil Kumar Assikanan, 34, is alleged to be one of the persons who transported Ephedrine from Solapur-based Avon Lifesciences to Navi Mumbai and Thane for selling it in the local market.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Bharat Shelke said Sushil was arrested from Bangalore. “On the instructions of Manoj Jain, one of the directors in Avon Lifesciences, and an accused in the case, Sushil would transport Ephedrine from Solapur to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane for selling it in the local market,” Shelke said.
He added, “We have information that he smuggled 180 kgs of Ephedrine from Avon Lifesciences so far.”
The police are probing if Sushil, who owns a shipping agency, used the sea route to transport Ephedrine abroad. “We will be interrogating him about the local link and if his network was used to transport Ephedrine abroad. We have his custody till August 31,” an officer said.
Apart from the 11 arrested, the Thane police have named alleged druglord Vicky Goswami and former starlet Mamta Kulkarni as wanted accused .
The police case is that Ephedrine, a controlled substance, was being diverted from Avon Lifesciences in Solapur to a Kenya-based drug cartel headed by Goswami where the Ephedrine was to be used to make party drug meth.
