The Delhi government on Tuesday directed the civic authorities not to unnecessary evict or harass genuine street vendors in the national capital as following demonetisation they were finding it hard to earn their livelihood. During a meeting of officials of various department, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Urban Development Minister Satyendar Jain directed authorities concerned not to “harass” genuine street vendors.

“In the meeting, the Deputy CM and Urban Development Minister said that in the light of demonetisation, street vendors are finding it hard to earn their livelihood and if they face the unnecessary eviction/harassment by the police or the local authorities then it will further aggravate their livelihood earning,” said a senior government official.

Where the eviction has already been done, all eligible prospective vendor (according to 2014 Act) should be allowed to start their livelihood and the evictee should be relocated to nearest possible vending zone, he added.

The Deputy CM sought the status of file for Delhi Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Rules and directed the officials concerned to immediately send the file to the LG Najeeb Jung for re-notification of the rules, and said he would personally request him to renotify it.
