Though former prime minister Manmohan Singh termed demonetisation a monumental mismanagement by the Centre during his speech in Rajya Sabha, his successor Narendra Modi walked over to him and shook hands when Parliament broke for lunch. Modi also spoke to senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma during the break.

Earlier in the day, Singh led the Opposition attack against the government over demonetisation in Rajya Sabha saying it’s a case of “organised loot and legalised plunder.” He added that though he agrees with the intent behind the move, the implementation has forced long lines at banks for nearly two weeks amounting to “a monumental management failure.”

He hoped the Prime Minister will find a practical and pragmatic decision to mitigate the sufferings of the common man and the poor who have been in distress after the decision. He said agriculture, unorganised sectors and small industry has also been hit hard by it and people were losing faith in the currency and banking system.

“These measures convinced me that the way the scheme has been implemented, it’s a monumental management failure. And in fact, it is a case of organised loot and legalised plunder. “It is not my intention to pick holes what this side or other side does. But I sincerely hope that the PM even in this late hour will help find us practical and pragmatic ways to provide relief to the suffering of the people of this country,” he said in Rajya Sabha as the debate on the issue resumed after Modi came into the House.

Perhaps, Modi, who claims to be a humble man, should have consulted Manmohan Singh. MMS has more economic sense packed under his turban than a million Modis and a trillion Jaitleys

Why is this even a news? Why can't the PM and a former PM, opposition leader shake hands? Is it about issues or are we making this a thing about personalities? We expect this kind of thing from TOI; not IE. Internet pages are are not physical news papers... you don't have to fill the blank pages. :)

Dr Manmohan Singh has been the RBI governor, Finance Minister and Prime Minister. When he says he agrees with the intent, why cant he give constructive suggestions to improve the implementation ?
