Though former prime minister Manmohan Singh termed demonetisation a monumental mismanagement by the Centre during his speech in Rajya Sabha, his successor Narendra Modi walked over to him and shook hands when Parliament broke for lunch. Modi also spoke to senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma during the break.

Earlier in the day, Singh led the Opposition attack against the government over demonetisation in Rajya Sabha saying it’s a case of “organised loot and legalised plunder.” He added that though he agrees with the intent behind the move, the implementation has forced long lines at banks for nearly two weeks amounting to “a monumental management failure.”

He hoped the Prime Minister will find a practical and pragmatic decision to mitigate the sufferings of the common man and the poor who have been in distress after the decision. He said agriculture, unorganised sectors and small industry has also been hit hard by it and people were losing faith in the currency and banking system.

“These measures convinced me that the way the scheme has been implemented, it’s a monumental management failure. And in fact, it is a case of organised loot and legalised plunder. “It is not my intention to pick holes what this side or other side does. But I sincerely hope that the PM even in this late hour will help find us practical and pragmatic ways to provide relief to the suffering of the people of this country,” he said in Rajya Sabha as the debate on the issue resumed after Modi came into the House.

Perhaps, Modi, who claims to be a humble man, should have consulted Manmohan Singh. MMS has more economic sense packed under his turban than a million Modis and a trillion Jaitleys

Yes, MMS has experience in letting SG/RG/RV-PG, DMK, etc.. scam in billions of dollars. So you are correct. He has more economic and political sense packed in his head.

Why is this even a news? Why can't the PM and a former PM, opposition leader shake hands? Is it about issues or are we making this a thing about personalities? We expect this kind of thing from TOI; not IE. Internet pages are are not physical news papers... you don't have to fill the blank pages. :)

Dr Manmohan Singh has been the RBI governor, Finance Minister and Prime Minister. When he says he agrees with the intent, why cant he give constructive suggestions to improve the implementation ?

The former PM could have shared constructive suggestion as to how best the Govt. can provide immediate succor to the people. After all it is congress that ruled the country for 60 years and created such a mess which this Govt. is now trying to clear.

He agrees with the intention behind the move but only worries about the implementation. Then how can it lead to 'organised loot and legalised ber'. He is simply contradicting himself.

Chinese parties have no role in the Indian economy. They can go for annual visit to Beijing and be happy.

Only later did Manmohan realise that Modi ji gave him a hand and skipped Rajya Sabha session

considering the numerous scams running into thousands of crore rupees under his dirty nose for ten years it is better not to bother him. however i agree that if he is still does not continue to be under the thumb of his illiterate leaders he could give some constructive suggestions but alas he continues to be.

When MMS was prime minister he was absolutely a Mounibaba and he could have spoken rarely unless was allowed to speak and function by his party president during the period of 10 years of UPA regimes. Now suddenly Mouni MMS woke up and started lecturing against demonisation of the government as monumental mismanagement and organised loot and legalised per, what a amazing speech in Rajya Sabha by a old octogenarian economist and former Prime Minister.

constructive opposition is something our congress and bjp don't do. obstructing parliament is the only thing they know.lt;br/gt;a person like manmohan singh should have given clear suggestions how government can handle the crisis today. everyone is aware that rolling back demonetization is impossible.

See how the world listens to this astute statesman with no rancour of a politician. What is well said must be appreciated and it is not upto Dr.Manmohan Singh to suggest steps to clear the muddle. It is for the ruling dispensation to find ways.

first Modi should learn to ask knowledgeable people instead of discussing with only RSSe. He has not even asked the only economist in this Govt ie the economic advisor ? Have anyone heard about Arabind Subramaniyam after this debate started on 8th ?
