The proceedings in the Lok Sabha were disrupted for the fourth consecutive day as the opposition demanded a discussion on demonetisation followed by a vote. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the government was ready for a discussion under Rule 193 that does not involve voting or adopting a resolution, but the opposition did not agree. The House was adjourned twice as members of the Congress and other opposition parties trooped into the Well and raised slogans against the government. They also demanded a statement by the Prime Minister in the House on the problems faced by people after the government’s demonetisation move.
The opposition also wants the government to form a joint parliamentary committee to probe allegations that information regarding the demonetisation decision was leaked selectively to BJP leaders. The government has strongly refuted those allegations. The BJP has also issued directions to all its members in the Rajya Sabha to be present for proceedings starting Monday as the party lacks a majority in the House.
