Despite the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) intention to start the road works in the city ahead of schedule, due to the demonetisation contractors are having a tough time accumulating money to pay the daily wage labourers.

A senior official stated that in the past couple of weeks, the road work has considerably slowed down in various parts of the city. “The demonetisation has certainly affected the ongoing road works across the city mainly because the contractor is not able to pay the labourers who have to be paid everyday. Since the contractors are running short of cash and are not able to pay, the labourers are not turning up at work any more,” said an official.

However, the official added that with the introduction of certain relaxations, the limit on withdrawals has been increased. “With revised rules, some relief has been granted in terms of withdrawal of money. We hope that things will be normalised and that work can be back on track within the next few weeks,” said the official.

According to civic chief Ajoy Mehta’s directions, all the contractors have been asked to put up barricades with their names as well as the dates of the start and completion of work. Mehta has also directed the zonal deputy commissioners to conduct surprise visits on road works. They will inspect the quality and speed of work and report any deficiencies found to the roads department for appropriate action.

Currently, work is underway on 305 roads in the city of which 83 fall in the island city, 88 in the eastern suburbs and 134 in western suburbs. The major roads include Dr BA Road, GD Ambekar road, NC Kelkar road, Siddivinayak Chowk, Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link road, SV road and Veera Desai Road, among others.
