A 45-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after he failed to get money from the bank. The police maintained that the deceased had committed suicide after he had failed to withdraw money from his bank account in Malda. The deceased has been identified as Gobinda Sarkar.

Police said that he had been queuing in the bank to withdraw Rs 12,000 prior to his death. They also added that the body was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan by his wife. “He had used a dupatta to hang himself from the ceiling fan. As per our investigation, he was extremely distressed since the demonetisation move because he hadn’t been able to get any work as a daily wage labourer. Moreover he felt that his money was being taken away and he was very depressed about it,” said the officer

According to the police, the people close to deceased claimed that the 45-year-old had been depressed over his “inability to run his family”. “His neighbors said that he had gone to different banks and even private agents to try and exchange whatever money he had in savings, but he was unable to do so,” said the officer.

His wife, Anguri – who works as a domestic help, was the one who discovered his body. She said, “Our entire family has been ruined because we were unable to get money to eat despite having some savings for rough days like these when there was no work. How can the government suddenly declare that our money is not valid?”
