At a time when serpentine queues outside banks and ATMs has become a recurring sight, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev on Sunday said if jawans fighting at the frontier can go without food for days, then those waiting patiently for their turn to withdraw or swap money can do the same for the nation. “During war, our soldiers fight sans eating for 7-8 days; so can’t we do the same for our nation”?” Ramdev told news agency ANI.
Reports of people struggling to buy their monthly rations because of the currency shortage have made headlines across the country. On Saturday, villagers in Madhya Pradesh looted a Public Distribution System outlet as the store owner refused to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. However, people can use the old denominations to pay utility bills till November 14.
Ramdev had previously lauded Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi for his bold move against curbing black money. He said it will go a long way in curbing terrorism, Naxalism and illegal businesses. ““Entire country greets the PM for his move to control black money, the illegal businesses, corruption and economic offences,” he said.
In 2012, at the height of Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement, Ramdev asked the erstwhile Congress government to discontinue the Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes.
