Under attack from the opposition for being “anti-Dalit”, the Delhi BJP unit, along with the party’s national leaders, organised an event Saturday at JLN Stadium to garner support from the Scheduled Castes. Titled, ‘Anusuchit Jati Yuva Sammelan’, the event saw the party lay claim to Dr B R Ambedkar’s legacy.

Speakers at the event stated that it was BJP leaders such as Shyama Prasad Mookerjee and RSS leader M S Golwalkar who “supported” Ambedkar when the Congress wanted to “destroy the architect of the Indian Constitution”.

The party also referred to history and epics such as the Ramayana in an effort to connect with the SC community”. “It was Maharishi Valmiki who supported and helped Sita bring up the sons of lord Rama. If there is a true leader of Bharat, it is Valmiki. He ensured that India’s culture will flourish,” said New Delhi MP and BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi.

Lekhi said that talking of Ambedkar only in terms of caste “lowers his stature”. “Ambedkar is the leader of women more than of the SCs, as women are more downtrodden even in the SC community,” said the MP.

Targeting the Congress, national president of the SC/ST Morcha, Dushyant Gautam, claimed that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had put “obstacles” in Ambedkar’s way. If not for Mookerjee’s support, Ambedkar would have missed his chance to be in Parliament, he said.
