Days after Odisha hospital fire, owner gets bail

On the evening of October 17, 19 patients of the private hospital were asphyxiated to death after a spark from a electrical short circuit triggered a major fire.

A Bhubaneswar court on Friday granted bail to SUM hospital owner Manoj Nayak, who had been arrested on charges of negligence after a blaze at the hospital that claimed 29 lives.

The Additional District Judge who granted the bail asked 56-year-old Nayak and the hospital’s superintendent, Pusparaj Samantasinghar, to cooperate with investigating officials. Both were granted bail against Rs 1 lakh surety bond. On the evening of October 17, 19 patients of the private hospital were asphyxiated to death after a spark from a electrical short circuit triggered a major fire.

Later, 10 more patients died, taking the death toll to 29.
