To get the two-wheeler riders wear helmets, police in Cuttack town would ask petrol pump owners not to sell fuel to motorcyclists who are not wearing helmets.

A team of traffic police will visit each petrol pump in Cuttack and educate its employees not to sell fuel to the motorists not wearing helmets. “We don’t want to implement the rule by imposing fine on the petrol pumps or threatening them. We will make them realise that they also have some duties towards society and their small initiative can save a precious life,” said said Cuttack ACP (Traffic) PK Dalai.

Dalai said police will also issue strict advisory to all the two-wheeler showrooms in the city to sell ISI marked helmet along with each bikes and scooters.

The police will also gift a helmet to anyone spotted riding a two-wheeler without a helmet. “We collect a fine amount of Rs 500 from violators for not wearing helmet. But now we will procure helmets with the fine amount and provide it to the violators,” said Dalai, elaborating on the decisions taken at traffic management committee. The committee was formed by Odisha high court.

The programme will be implemented on a pilot basis at Mata Matha and Khannagar area of the city from January next year.
