CBI files case against ‘diversion’ of items from CSD Ahmedabad, conducts search

The CBI has registered a case in connection with an alleged diversion of store items from the army Canteen Stores Department (CSD), Ahmedabad, to private market. A team of CBI also conducted search at five places on the premises of private persons and CSD officials, and seized documents. According to the CBI, the case was registered following a complaint received from the Ministry of Defence alleging a nexus between CSD Area Depot, Ahmedabad, Unit Run Canteen (URC) and third party (civilians) for diverting large amounts of quantity of CSD store in the commercial market.

The CBI said “it was alleged that from January 2015 to June 2015, one of the URCs repeatedly submitted indents for certain category of goods every month and collected supplies which was abnormal.”

During cross checking of the payment details, a CBI release stated, it was revealed that there were large number of payments received from third party against indents of a particular URC. The release further stated that “it also appeared that the stores were shown to have been collected by authorized representative of URC on each occasion”.

The CBI has said that payments to the tune of Rs 1.83 crore was received by way of 3rd party payments in the six months period which are under investigation. It said that the total amount of the suspected fraudulent payments was found to the tune of Rs 2.12 crore.
