Chaos ensued outside the gate of the RML hospital in New Delhi where Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was barred from meeting the family of the ex-serviceman who allegedly committed suicide late Tuesday night.

Ram Kishen Grewal, the ex-serviceman who took his own life, was protesting the anomalies in the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme. He consumed poison in the lawns behind Jawahar Bhawan. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has sought details of the incident from the department of ex-servicemen welfare.

“I want to meet the family. Please allow me to meet them. What is this new India that you are trying to create?” Gandhi is heard asking the cops who manned the gate of the hospital in central Delhi. He is also seen requesting the cops to allow entry to a man who is reportedly a patient. Gandhi later asked prime minister Narendra Modi to implement the OROP scheme in a meaningful way.

Special Commissioner MK Meena was quoted by news agency ANI saying Gandhi was detained for trying to enter hospital despite being advised otherwise.

Police told PTI that Grewal, along with some other ex-servicemen, was in the process of submitting a memorandum to the Defence Ministry over the issue of OROP. According to his friends, Grewal had been upset over the issue for sometime.

Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia was also ‘forcibly removed’ from the hospital premises after he went to meet the grieving family. He later tweeted, “I had gone to the hospital to meet the family of the ex-serviceman, not to launch a dharna. What mistake have I done?”

“Both farmers and soldiers are committing suicide in Modi Raj. That means the Prime Minister is lying that OROP has been implemented. Why would Ram Kishan ji have committed suicide if OROP was being implemented?” CM Arvind Kejriwal wrote on Twitter.
