Controversy erupted during the passage of obituary resolutions in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha with the Opposition Congress demanding that the name of ex-serviceman Ramkishan Grewal be included in the list of martyrs whose death was condoled.

However, CM Manohar Lal Khattar said since he had committed suicide, his name could not be included in the martyrs’ list. Grewal, who had been among those protesting over the One Rank One Pension (OROP) issue, died after consuming poison in New Delhi Wednesday.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi along with senior leaders of the Haryana Congress were detained by the Delhi Police as they tried to meet Grewal’s family at the hospital. They were also present at his funeral at Bhiwani on Thursday.

As the obituary resolutions were read out, Congress Legislature Party leader Kiran Choudhary said there was another martyr Ramkishan Grewal whose name should be added in the list of martyrs as he had died while fighting for a cause.

Responding to the demand, Khattar said, “The name cannot be added in the list of martyrs. It will set a wrong precedent. We have sympathy for the family. But the House cannot add his name as a martyr,” he said.

Leader of Opposition in Haryana Vidhan Sabha, INLD’s Abhay Singh Chautala, said since the CM had objected to the addition of Grewal’s name as a martyr, he should explain why the government had given Rs 10 lakh to the family and offered a government job.
