Congress MLA from Payagpur in Bahraich district, Mukesh Srivastava, on Thursday joined Samajwadi Party (SP) in the presence of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Srivastava had earlier been named in an alleged case of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam.

The CBI is probing the case. Srivastava, however, said he has no association with any firm working under NRHM and was named in the case due to political conspiracy. Congress MLA from Deoband, Mavia Ali — who was expelled from SP in 2011 — too was present at the event held in Akhilesh’s residence. When asked, Akhilkesh said “Ali had been associated with the SP in the past.”

Ali, however, said he attended the event because he was invited in the capacity of the Deoband MLA at the foundation stone laying ceremony of Urdu Darwaza — a project of the UP Urdu Academy.
