The Chhattisgarh Congress launched a “forest satyagraha” from Nagri block in Dhamtari district on Tuesday, intending to transform the campaign into a statewide movement, two years ahead of the state elections.

According to party leaders, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi would arrive in Chhattisgarh between Dussehra and Diwali to lead a march from Dantewada to Charamma.

Over four decades, villagers in Sihawa and Nagri have been fighting for the ownership of forest land, and Congress said that this fight was symbolic of similar struggles going on across the state. “Forest dwellers have the first right on the forests. The BJP government is trying to cheat them,” said PCC chief Bhupesh Baghel.
