The Congress party’s Tuesday  state-wide ‘bandh’ in Odisha to protest against the ongoing Mahanadi river dispute. As the protesters marched on the streets, raising slogans, police detained them. The Congress workers along with other protesters carried banners demanding stoppage of barrage construction on the river. The banners also carried photos of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on them.

The call for a bandh was made on Friday by the Congress party demanding the Union government intervene and solve the issue. Mahanadi river dispute has been a long-standing bone of contention between neighbour states Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Harichandan Das lashed out at both Biju Janta Dal (BJD) and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) for playing politics over the issue. Current protests are being called against the Chhattisgarh government undertaking construction of barrage on the river which may have serious implications on the flow of water to Hirakud dam in Odisha.
