Delhi University professor Nandini Sundar today strongly rubbished allegations of Chhattisgarh Police linking her to the murder of a tribal villager in Maoist-hit Bastar while a number of civil rights bodies called the charges a tactic of “revenge and harassment”. Reacting strongly, she said it was a clear case of being “framed” and that police have been forcing some people in Bastar to name her and others in someway.

Sundar, a professor of Sociology department of Delhi University, also accused IGP (Bastar Range) S R P Kalluri of forcing the wife of deceased villager Shamnath Baghel, to file a complaint against her, claiming the top police official was specifically targetting the activists.

“The FIR is patently absurd. We condemn the killing of Shamnath Baghel and reiterate that it has nothing to do with us. This is clearly part of IG Kalluri’s attempt to intimidate and harass journalists, lawyers, researchers, political leaders and human rights activists who have exposed the reign of fake encounters, gang rapes etc. that are going on in Bastar,” she claimed.

“In particular, this is a direct fallout of the CBI charge sheet of special police officers turned constables for arson in Tadmetla in 2011, an operation which Kalluri directed. First our effigies were burnt by the police and now a false FIR is being filed against us,” Sundar told PTI from the US.

She also alleged that police have been forcing some people to name them in someway since May.

“They have been inciting them. My stand (on Maoist issue) has been consistent. I have been saying the same thing for last 10 years.

“I have been condemning Maoists for killing informers, I have been condemning police for fake encounters. How is it likely that I will suddenly murder someone? I haven’t even been to Bastar for months,” she said.

Sundar has been working extensively in Maoist-hit regions like Bastar and it was on her petition that the Supreme Court had banned the state-backed anti-Maoist force Salwa Judum, calling it unconstitutional. She has also been highlighting situation of ordinary villagers in Bastar and other areas.

Sundar and Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Archana Prasad are among 10 people named by police in connection with the murder of Baghel based on the complaint of his wife.

Armed Naxals had allegedly killed Baghel on Friday night at his residence in Nama village.

Sundar alleged that Kalluri was targeting activists as he is worried about being implicated in a case they have been fighting for years.

“Will they attack all people who are critical of them? Are we living in a democracy or has the country become a banana republic where this is just one of the incident in series of attacks on activists?” asked Sundar.

Indian Peoples’ Theatre Association (IPTA), which highlights civil rights issues through plays, and Progressive Writers’ Association (PWA) issued a joint statement condemning Chhattisgarh Police for the “false charges” against the activists.

“The police had also burnt the effigies of these activists earlier when they had exposed the police atrocities, including rape, on adivasi women in Chhattisgarh. In the light of the recent CBI probe, initiated in response to a petition by Sunder, finding the police guilty of burning the adivasi villages, these charges are certainly tactics of revenge and harassment by police,” they said in a statement.

The two professors along with few others had visited Bastar in May along with Chhattisgarh State Secretary CPI-M Sanjay Parate and addressed a group of villagers.

Look how bigots interpret the work of an internationally acclaimed academician. That's the problem with our country. We are illiterate and feel we know everything. Cops like kalluri keep fabricating cases and gawaars below commenting with all ill-gotten confidence keep getting fooled.

How a professor of a Delhi university drawing huge sum of money has even time for these kind of activities? Should not she be spending time and energy on real research? What a 5 star activist!

Mthrh00d, fighting for poor means bringing jobs and providing self employment training, etc. Not misguided poor to fight their own country. No one else can make you rich and prosperous but can give you only a helping hand. You dumba55 brain washed foreign slaves are dumb as 5git.

I think she doesn't need to be a professor, she is a better Maoist. Sack her and request that she join her comrade (who she is sending to their deaths against the Indian state). Easy to make sacrifices when those making these sacrifices are not your own.

Strange thing is happening.. You catch any criminal and she cries foul saying she is being framed. Then media starts a trial exonerating these criminals saying this is emergency... Maoism is an extinct ideology deliberately festered by media in the name of freedom of expression.. No country tolerates these pests..but we make them heroes...

This activist should give up her teaching job and take up full time Maoism... Instead of drawing ry from taxpayers money and creating an army of leftist criminals.... under the veil of academics she is indulging in nefarious activities.. She and her band of criminals should be given capital punishment... And there are bhakts who say this lady works for poor.. Nowadays murder is also a social cause...

This lady is an ideologue of Maoism and through her knowledge and literature she influenced the gullible students and innocent tribals in Bastar District .Advocating for MAOISM means they don't believe in the consution and political system of India. They are supporters of MAO and China. They don't see eye to eye withour security men They want all our policemen and their supportrs must be finished or punished .Killing of innocent men and police by naxlites are considered to be a process of revolution and transformation from a multi polar democracy to a hardened communism and thus totally abolishing the basic human rights in the name of equality .These people are anathema for the nation because they don't observe the death rituals of their own relations and never regard our culture and our tradition. They must be condemned and punished.

In my opinion only innocents are lodged in jails, Watching or getting real criminals to see is a rarity. Nothing changed since the British left India. We have a police force that still portrays the same mindset as it used to portray during British rule. It is a brute force of goons that operates legally. First used to serve the white Britishers and now it is serving white khadi clad corrupt netas and white collar bureaucrats and industrialists.

The police and other legal agencies should frame a water tight cases against these five star activists.lt;br/gt;Majority of these Naxal and terror sympathizers have rised enough funds in Europe and America in the name of figting for tribals and spent the same money in Dubai shopping festivals enroute back to India.

Instead of teaching in University from where they are getting fat ries, these so called professors never spare any opportunity to instigate innocent minds to fight against forces and govt to fulfill their marxist agenda. If any FIR is registered they and their groups start yelling at the murder of democracy, freedom of speech etc. They all live in luxury and pretend as friends of poverty ridden villagers to provoke them and then flee.

Government should stand firm and ask these so called intellectuals to fight their legal cases like normal people. It is dangerous that these people start abusing Democracy and start calling insutions all type of names when caught on wrong foot.
