Chandigarh: Auto driver arrested for ‘molesting’ Egypt woman

The police said the incident took place around 11 pm Friday when the victim hired the auto from Elante Mall.

The UT police arrested an autorickshaw driver for allegedly ‘molesting’ a foreign national late evening on Friday. The police identified the suspect as Nanu, a resident of Shastri Nagar, Manimajra.

The woman was also assaulted by the auto driver, the police said.

The police said the incident took place around 11 pm Friday when the victim hired the auto from Elante Mall. Police said the victim, who is from Egypt, was employed in the city.

Sector 49 police station Station House Officer Ranjot Singh said, “The driver took a different turn. The victim raised an alarm and the driver stopped the auto,” he said.

Ranjot said the suspect also pulled the hair of the victim. “The girl raised an alarm and some passerby rescued her,” he said. The victim was brought to the police station and a case was registered. “The accused fled the spot and left the auto there. We have seized the auto,” said Ranjot.
SDPO (South) Deepak Yadav said the suspect was booked on molestation charges.”There is no rape complaint from the victim,” he said.
