The government has asked all departments to retain copies of documents before handing them over to investigating agencies like the CBI and the Income Tax department.

The move assumes significance as there have been instances of official papers going missing amid departmental
probes by investigating agencies.

Notably, the Home Ministry has set up an inquiry committee to probe the issue of missing files related to the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.
