Four days after she and her 14-year-old daughter were raped on the fields by the highway just outside Bulandshahr, off Delhi-Kanpur NH-91, the 35-year-old victim Wednesday requested the police to arrest the culprits at the earliest and demanded death penalty for them.
“Three people have been arrested so far (but) the others are still at large. I do not know the status of the investigation,” she said Wednesday afternoon at the family’s one-room home in an unauthorised colony on Delhi-Ghaziabad border. In the bylane leading to the house, a group of men held candles and placards, shouting slogans against Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan and demanding death penalty for the guilty. Earlier in the day, leaders such as Shobha Ojha of the Congress and Sahibabad MLA Amarpal Sharma of BSP met the family and asked the administration for quick action.
With the area teeming with media persons and leaders from various political parties, the victim’s family said there was no way their identity could be kept hidden from the neighbours. “With the presence of so many people — the media, the politicians — everyone knows what happened. What will we do now,” her husband, a 39-year-old Ola cab driver, asked.
About their next step, he said, “We haven’t had any time to think about the future.” His wife said, “My daughter is shattered…we are in a lot of pain.”
