A 12-member panel supported by the Gujarat BJP was declared winner unopposed on the 12 seats of Mehsana Agriculture Produce Market Committee on Monday. The panel was declared winner after all 12 members supported by the Congress withdrew their candidatures on Monday, the last day for withdrawal.
This is the first such electoral victory for the party after demonetisation. It also marks the end of Congress’ 38-year-long dominance on the Mehsana APMC, led by veteran co-operative leader Natvarlal Patel, who is the current chairman of the APMC.
Voting for the election was scheduled on December 7. Twelve persons supported by the Congress had filed their nominations on November 24. However, Natvarlal Patel had not filed his form to contest the elections.
The BJP-supported panel was led by former MLA Khodabhai Patel. The BJP panel, sources said, was actively supported by Deputy CM Nitin Patel, who is a native of Mehsana district and the arch rival of Natvarlal Patel.
