Almost three months after sacking Dayashankar Singh from the post of party state vice-president and expelling him for making objectionable remark against BSP chief Mayawati, the BJP Friday appointed his wife Swati as state president of its women wing – Mahila Morcha — paving the way for her political debut. Party sources said that the step was aimed at targeting BSP, as Swati had been holding public meetings and speaking against BSP leaders who had allegedly made objectionable remarks against her minor daughter and mother-in-law during a protest in Lucknow in July.

Swati had already announced that she was ready to contest the election against Mayawati. BJP spokesman Chandra Mohan confirmed that Swati has been appointed as state president of Mahila Morcha. Earlier in the day, BJP state president Keshav Prasad Maurya spoke to Swati over phone, informing her about the role she was being assigned.
“It is completely a new experience for me. After taking charge of Mahila Morcha, I will take decisions on issues pertaining to women with consultation of other leaders and as per the ideology of the party,” Swati told The Indian Express. Swati termed her appointment as “debut in active politics” that happened spontaneously following the case lodged against her husband and the subsequent case she lodged against BSP leaders. She claimed that she had joined BJP during party’s recent membership drive, but will be visiting party office for the first time soon to take charge as Mahila Morcha chief.
She added that she will continue with her battle against Mayawati. BJP had expelled Dayshankar from the party in July after he compared Mayawati to a prostitute. The BSP chief had raised the issue in Rajya Sabha, and her party leaders had lodged an FIR, following which Dayashankar was arrested. He was released on bail later.
Swati too had filed case against BSP leaders for allegedly making objectionable remarks against her family members. Swati had also announced that that she was ready to contest against Mayawati in case the BSP chief decides to contest from an unreserved seat. After coming out on bail, Dayashankar has been accompanying her as the couple tour districts addressing public meetings under banner of various social organisations. BJP had also extended its support to Swati as well as other party leaders who had staged a demonstration in Lucknow demanding action against BSP leaders. Both Dayashankar and Swati had tied ‘rakhi’ to senior RSS office bearers during Raksha Bandhan in Lucknow last month.
