A little more than a year after the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) approved the renaming of Aurangzeb Road to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road on East Delhi MP Maheish Girri’s urging, another Delhi MP has made a similar proposal.
This time, it’s New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi who has proposed that the name of Race Course Road (RCR) — on which the Prime Minister’s residence is located — be changed to Ekatma Marg — based on the philosophy of her party’s ideologue Deendayal Upadhyaya. The proposal has drawn flak from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress in Delhi, who said they would oppose the move.
Lekhi said. “There are two aspects to this proposal. Firstly, the name conveys a feeling of disassociation and it can’t be the inspiration for any PM. Secondly… we are celebrating the anniversary of Deendayal Upadhyaya and the new name is proposed as a tribute to his preachings,” she said.
Lekhi said the PM is a disciple of Upadhyaya and the epitome of his preachings. “He has taken the path of Ekatma — integral — to achieve nobleness and that is why the path should be named so. Ekatma eliminates the ideas of me, myself and integrates everything,” she said.
The AAP opposed the proposal and demanded that the road be renamed after a martyr. AAP MLA from Delhi Cantonment and NDMC member Surinder Singh said he would oppose the proposal in a meeting of the Council. CM Arvind Kejriwal is also a member of the NDMC.
