A BJP MLA resurfaced on Thursday, more than 24 hours after his wife filed a missing person’s report with the police. He said that he felt humiliated because he could not save his own men from police action.

Dharampuri MLA Kalu Singh Thakur “disappeared” from his home in Mandu early Wednesday without informing anyone. His phone was switched off.

His wife lodged a complaint with the police, saying that the MLA was feeling dejected after the police arrested his personal assistant and a gunman for allegedly threatening employees of a road construction company and damaging its vehicles a few days ago. Thakur had spoken to the PA and gunman after they were released on bail on Tuesday.

On the basis of his wife’s complaint, the police alerted their counterparts in neighbouring districts and checked Thakur’s call detail records for his whereabouts.

The MLA resurfaced at his home on Thursday. “What’s the point in being an MLA if I can’t save my own people? I was tense after my personal assistant and a gunman were arrested. Some policemen are hand in glove with the contractor and booked my men in a false case,’’ he said.

State BJP chief Nandkumar Chouhan said Thakur’s conduct was not proper. “You are supposed to show the way to the people. You can’t simply go away without informing your family or the party,’’ he said.

Thakur said he would offer an explanation to the party and apologise for his act.
