J&K Deputy CM Nirmal Singh Thursday backed the demand for setting up a sainik colony in the state. The statement by Singh, who represents BJP in the ruling coalition, came on a day Kashmir observed a shutdown to protest against the government’s plans to set up a sainik colony and separate colonies for Kashmir Pandits.

Singh said that he doesn’t know of any proposal to set up a sainik colony, but added that the demand is “genuine”. “In 1979, a sainik colony was set-up in Jammu, which is part of Jammu & Kashmir. All the sainiks there are state subjects. This demand is not wrong. Every sainik has this right,” he said.

Singh said the proposed colonies for Kashmiri Pandits would also be inhabited by the Muslims.
