The Opposition, led by the BJP, stalled Assembly proceedings Thursday demanding a judicial probe into the police lathicharge on Dalit students in Patna. CPI (ML) MLA Mehboob Alam had to be admitted to a hospital as he fainted after joining the protesting legislators.

Over a dozen Dalit students, protesting under the banner of Bharatiya Chhatra Kalyan Sangh, were lathicharged in the city on Wednesday. The students were protesting against the government decision to cut post-matric scholarship amount for SC/ST category from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 15,000 from the 2016-17 session.

BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said that hundreds of students had been forced to return home from their colleges in other states due to non-payment of fees.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Chhatra Kalyan Sangh, a body of Dalit students, has threatened to intensify their stir if the state government does not rollback its decision.
