After the Patna High Court had quashed Bihar government’s order prohibition on Friday, the Bihar government on Monday moved the Supreme Court regarding the matter. The case is likely to be heard on October 7.
The court order specified that the liquor ban stood lifted till the state government notified the amended Act — the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016.
The move comes following the introduction of a new law on liquor ban by the Nitish Kumar government on Sunday which came up with even harsher provisions. The government notified the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016 to ensure that the ban on sale and consumption of alcohol including Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) as well spiced and domestic liquor continued in the state.
Meanwhile, a former professor at Patna University has filed an RTI and challenged Bihar government’s new policy in the Patna High Court.
