Investigation into the escape of Jatinder alias Gogi, an undertrial, from the custody of Delhi Police last month has revealed a feud between two gangs near the Haryana border, and a revenge plan gone wrong.
Among the four accused arrested over Gogi’s escape are a national-level boxer, Deepak Pahal, and athlete, Parveen Pandhi alias Lara, both of whom were allegedly part of his gang. They are being questioned by police.
According to police sources, Gogi and his rival Sunil alias Tillu have been running extortion rackets in Alipur and Sonipat for years, and the constant strife between the two gangs has often ended in bloodshed. In the last two years, four members of the two gangs have been killed, while many others have barely survived attempts on their life.
On how Gogi managed to escape from police custody, sources said at least 10 members of his gang were involved in the plan, and four of them have been arrested. Many college students and sports persons are part of Gogi’s gang and they may have helped in the escape plan, said sources.
A police officer involved with the investigation told The Indian Express that the rivalry between Gogi and Tillu dates back to their college days, when both were students of Delhi University and clashed over student politics. The dispute took a violent turn in 2012, when Gogi and his associates allegedly shot at Vikas, a close confidant of Tillu.
A police case was registered against Gogi, who went on the run, said sources.
“Both Gogi’s and Tillu’s gangs are involved in extortion and smuggling arms,” said the police officer. In the next few years, the two gangs repeatedly targeted each other, and several members members were killed.
In 2015, Tillu was arrested by Sonipat police and put behind bars. Presently, Tillu is lodged in Sonipat jail. While Gogi was looking for a chance to hit back at Tillu, he was also nabbed by the Haryana CIA from Sonipat and handed over to the Delhi Police.
According to the investigators, Gogi was so desperate to kill Tillu that he hatched a conspiracy for his escape from Tihar jail. His two close confidants, Gulshan alias Gullu and Rohit, were tasked to gather the new boys— including students and sportspersons — to help execute Gogi’s escape plan, said sources.
