CPI(M) state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra alleged that his byelection campaign was attacked by the TMC, led by youth leader Azizul Rahman Mondal. Mishra had gone there to campaign for Mandira Panda, who is contesting the Tamluk Lok Sabha by-elections, which will take place on November 19.

According to the Left, apart from Mishra, Haldia CPI(M) candidate Tapasi Mishra was also attacked while campaigning. According to Left sources, the police had given permission for the rally on November 13, but at the time of the campaigning, TMC activists allegedly attempted to stop the march. “Mishra showed that he had valid documents,” said a senior CPI(M) leader.

Following reports about the attack on Mishra, thousands of party activists agitated in central Kolkata on Thursday evening. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the agitators and arrested party’s central committee member Shyamal Chakraborty and party MLA and Left Front Legislative Party (LFLP) leader Sujan Chakraborty from central Kolkata.
