ATM cash van guard ‘threatened’in Mumbai’s Pali Hill, Bandra

A security guard accompanying a cash refilling van was allegedly threatened with a knife by a man near an ICICI Bank in Pali Hill, Bandra, on Tuesday. The person, who is yet to be identified, is on the run.

According to the Bandra police, the accused was standing near the cash refilling van at ICICI bank opposite Gold’s Gym in Pali Hill around 8.30 pm Tuesday and threatened the guard with a knife. However, he did not assault the guard but instead ran away. The police do not believe he was trying to rob the cash van on knifepoint.

“The guards were about to refill the ATM. One of the guards saw the person standing close to the van and told him to stand away from it.The person got angry and started having an argument with the guards. He then allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened the guard,” said Pandit Nivruti Thackeray, senior police inspector at Bandra police station.

“We don’t believe he was trying to rob the van on knifepoint. The van was locked and had four armed guards accompanying it,” the officer added.

The guard who was threatened lodged the complaint with the police.

“From what I have heard, the person had walked up to the van and pulled out a knife at the cash van guard as he was getting ready to refill the bank’s ATM. The guard pushed him away and took out his rifle. The person got scared and ran away,” said Surendra Singh, a guard at the ICICI bank, whose shift had just ended around 8 pm, before the incident took place. He did not witness the incident.
