In a joint operation, the Army and Assam Police Monday apprehended Nikunja Kathar, self-styled commander-in-chief of an outfit called United People’s Liberation Army, which was seen as responsible for the murder of West Karbi Anglong’s then SP Nityananda Goswami in June 2014.

Kathar was apprehended from Bordolong, a village on the outskirts of Diphu, the Karbi Anglong district headquarter, along with two other cadres of the outfit, Guwahati-based Defence PRO Lt Col Suneet Newton said.

Diphu is about 250 km from Guwahati.

“Preliminary interrogation has confirmed his recent visit to Myanmar, where he held talks with leaders of NSCN(K), ULFA(I) and KPLT, to revive UPLA in Assam,” Newton said.
