An indefinite railway blockade called by the Indigenous Students’ Forum (ISF) of Dima Hasao district in Assam that began on Tuesday has affected railway services between Tripura and the rest of the country, with the railways authorities either cancelling or terminating several trains on the Lumding-Silchar section.
Four major trains that have been affected due to the cancellation and termination included Agartala-Sealdah Kanchenjungha Express, the only railway train between Kolkata and Tripura, which also provides vital train link to Mizoram and southern Assam.
While the 25657 Up Sealdah-Agartala Kanchanjungha Express was terminated at Lumding on Tuesday morning, the 15660 Down Agartala-Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express that left Agartala on Tuesday morning was terminated at Badarpur, Northeast Frontier Railway CPRO PJ Sharma informed.
The indefinite blockade that was called by the ISF of Dima Hasao district to press for early settlement of compensation for land acquired from the tribal people during construction of the new Lumding-Silchar broadgauge line, also led to termination of the Guwahati-Silchar and Silchar-Guwahati passenger trains.
The strike, if continued, will also affect the Tripura Sundari Express, the only train that connects the Tripura capital with the national Capital. The Tripura Sundari Express that leaves Anand Vihar (New Delhi) every Monday, reaches Lumding Thursday midnight to travel through Dima Hasao district during the night hours.
