An Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) was crushed to death by three car-borne snatchers, who were fleeing with the snatched money in an i20 car, at a Police Naka close to Subhanpur police station in Kapurthala district on Saturday afternoon. They also injured a havaldar who sustained leg and thigh fractures and was admitted in a hospital. The ASI, Surinder Singh (58), died on the spot.
Police managed to nab the three looters after a brief chase from Subhanpur police area. The three snatchers, the names of whom are yet to be confirmed by the police, hail from Tarn Taran district had reportedly snatched purses of two scooter-borne women in Begowal area at around 3:00 pm. A total amount of Rs 17,000 was there in two purses.
The women informed police immediately, following which ASI Nadala started chasing the snatchers and also alerted the entire police team of the district.
“The snatchers were driving their car towards Subhanpur side. And when Subhanpur police came to know about it, the ASI of Subhanpur police station, Surinder Singh, who was standing on a T-Point. When he saw an i20 car on the road, he indicated the occupants to stop the car but instead of stopping they accelerated and when ASI ran towards the vehicle they ran over him and fled,” said SSP Kapurthala, Rajinder Singh adding that another cop Harpal Singh, who was also accompanying the deceased ASI, was hit by the car and sustained two fractures and other injuries.
Police, however, went behind the looters, who after leaving their car snatched a motorcycle from some passerby and went into narrow lanes to dodge the police. But police pursued them till the end and finally nabbed the three from the fields of a village near Subhanpur.
The SSP says that they will be booked for murder, attempt to murder, loot and several other charges as a case is being registered and their previous record is too being checked.
The deceased ASI was living with his wife and three children, all settled abroad, in village Kukka. Police sources informed that the names of the snatchers have been identified as Gurpal, Grudeep alias Deepa and Mithu.
