An Army captain serving as the medical officer at Siachen glacier was killed, while 15 soldiers were rescued, when an Army patrol team got trapped in an avalanche in Ladakh on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Captain Ashwani Kumar.
Defence spokesman Lt Col N N Joshi said an Army patrol team was moving from one area to another when they got trapped in an avalanche on Friday morning.
According to the officials, the soldiers of the neighbouring stations launched a rescue operation and used the latest tracking equipment to save the trapped soldiers. However, Captain Kumar died before he could be rescued.
The body of the Captain was recovered late on Friday night and sent to his native place in Patiala, Punjab. The Army said the slain officer was deployed with 3 Ladakh Scouts.
