A Pakistani doctor and a ward boy have been arrested for allegedly raping a 21-year-old dengue patient at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Apollo Hospital in Gandhinagar.

Dr Rajesh Chauhan and ward boy Chandrakant Vankar were arrested on Thursday, two days after a rape complaint was filed with Adalaj police. On Friday, they were sent to police custody till Saturday by the Gandhinagar district court.

Police said Dr Chauhan belongs to Sindh province of Pakistan and was working in Ahmedabad on a long-term visa.

The arrests were made after the victim pointed at them during an identification parade conducted in the hospital in the presence of an executive magistrate.

“There are injury marks on the private parts of the victims. We have examined her medical condition and samples have been sent for forensic examination,” said a senior police office.

Earlier, Adalaj police inspector K K Pandya had told The Indian Express that the victim was raped twice while she was unconscious. The accused reportedly took turns to rape her on the night of Saturday and Sunday.

Hospital spokesperson Sandip Joshi refused to divulge any information and said: “We are cooperating with the police who are investigating the case. We have nothing more to say.”
