Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap took to Twitter on Sunday to question Prime Minister Narendra Modi and extend his support to Karan Johar, whose film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has run into a controversy since it has Pakistani actor Fawad Khan.

“The World must learn from us. We solve all our problems by blaming it on movies and banning it.. #ADHM . With you on this @karanjohar,” he tweeted on Sunday morning.

Directed by Johar, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which is slated for an October 28 release, is in trouble as the Cinema Owners’ Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) announced that it would not screen it in four states — Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Goa.

Even as the film industry remains divided on the issue, Kashyap added: “Just to make it clear, I complain because I expect my government to protect us, I question the PM because I have every right to.” Kashyap also tweeted that Modi hasn’t apologised for meeting Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in December 2015, when Johar was shooting for his film, which also features Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles.

The director-actor added that the people from the film industry had been “vulnerable for long” and while “the real trade between the two countries across the border has not faced any kind of opposition,” they have to pay the price for it.

Throughout the day, twitterati remained divided over Kashyap’s tweets criticising Modi. The 44-year-old filmmaker later asked the media to stop calling him. “You are wasting your time because this is all that I have to say and they are not drunk tweets.”

Several actors also backed the release of the film. Alia Bhatt said it was unfair to stall the release of a film “because when the film was shot, a year ago, the climate was nice”. Swara Bhaskar tweeted: “Instead of banning & boycotting films I wonder how many self proclaimed patriots make any real contribution benefiting our soldiers?”

Sidharth Malhotra also found COEAI’s decision unjustified. “We are not stopping any other ties with that country, but only movies,” he said.

Just because they hire stanis, doesnt require India to go soft on our Neighbour country or their citizens. The film makers dont seem to realize the situation we are in.For them life goes on as usual, keep making films with a controversial topic or a dirty scene and mint money.
