A 22-year-old man was crushed to death when a concrete mixer machine, which he was cleaning onboard a truck, suddenly started rolling at Velagapudi in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh Tuesday.

The accident took place at the construction site of the temporary secretariat and led to a violent protest by workers who pelted stones at the police and set fire to an ambulance that had come to shift the body.

Devender Kumar had arrived from Uttar Pradesh two days ago and was hired to clean the concrete mixer by a sub-contractor of the L&T, which is executing a portion of the project.

After the mishap, the workers started protesting when they came to know that Devender’s body was immediately shifted to Guntur Government Hospital for a post-mortem. They were demanding to see the body. When the workers did not relent, the police were forced to bring Devender’s body back to the site. District Collector C Sridhar and L&T authorities assured the workers that a compensation of Rs 20 lakh would be paid to the family of the victim.
