The in-laws of a pregnant woman in Andhra Pradesh allegedly tried to set her on fire after an astrologer predicted that she would give birth to a girl child. Police said that T Girija, 28, wife of T Srinivasulu, a tenant farmer, gave birth to a daughter last year, following which her in-laws allegedly harassed her. When she recently became pregnant again, her mother-in-law T Lakshmi Kantamma took her to an astrologer to know if she would give birth to a boy.
When the astrologer said she would give birth to a girl again, Lakshmi allegedly started harassing Girija, demanding she bring money from her parents to take care of two daughters. “They started forcing her to undergo an abortion. On the night of August 20, Lakshmi and her daughter T Subhashini allegedly poured kerosene on her and tried to set her on fire. Girija has said in her complaint that she woke up just as her mother-in-law struck a match stick, and ran for her life. She suffered minor burns on her stomach,’’ Mutukur Police Station’s sub-inspector Srinivas Reddy said.
The incident, which happened in Boduswami Kadriga village in Mutukur in Nellore district, came to light after Girija lodged a complaint Monday. Her husband Srinivasulu was not at home at the time of the incident.Girija’s husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law are absconding, police said.
