The Congress, AAP and suspended local SAD legislator Inderbir Singh Bolaria protested against the proposed solid waste treatment plant (SWTP) in Amritsar on Sunday, the day Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was in the city to inaugurate a waste collection system.
Amritsar police detained Congress leaders and Bolaria before Sukhbir reached the city. Bolaria was earlier suspended from the party over protests against the SWTP in Bhagtanwala.
Former Congress MLA Harjinder Singh Thekedar, AAP candidate from Amritsar south Inderbir Singh Nijjar and Bolaria found common ground and protested from Amritsar-Tarn Taran Road to oppose the plant.
Nijjar left the spot before the police detained Thekedar and Bolaria, alongwith their supporters before Sukhbir arrived for the inauguration.
Later, Sukhbir flagged off the vans, that will collect the city’s waste and dump it at Bhagtanwala. He also laid the foundation stone of the railways over bridge on Amritsar-Tarn Taran road.
A rally that was to be addressed by Sukhbir after inaugurating a new office of the Municipal Corporation in Amritsar in Ranjit Avenue was cancelled, reportedly, due to low turnout. An Akali leader said that it was responsibility of BJP minister Anil Joshi to “arrange for the audience”.
