A 21-year-old Amity University student from Telangana was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his hostel room at the varsity’s Noida campus on Friday evening, police said. While police recovered a suicide note written by the student, no police complaint was filed till Saturday evening. Gandra Sai Krishna had come to Noida to study PG Diploma in Facility Management at Amity University around five months ago, said police. His family lives in Sathupalli in Telangana’s Khammam district.
Krishna was among a handful of students who stayed back on campus during Diwali vacation, said the university.
“His body was found in the hostel room by his friends yesterday. Due to the Diwali break, most students had gone home. Classes were expected to begin only from the coming Monday. We are trying to understand why he took such a step. He was in the first semester of a year-long PG Diploma course in Facility Management. He was academically sound and his attendance was good. He was a regular student. His first semester examinations were scheduled to start from November 21,” said Savita Mehta, vice-president (communications), Amity Group.
Even as Krishna’s father, advocate Deen Dayal Gandra, reached Noida on Saturday, his family did not file a police complaint. “No FIR has been registered since we have not received any complaint yet,” said Amaranth Yadav, SHO, Noida Sector 39.
According to police, Krishna was supposed to have lunch with a couple of his friends on Friday afternoon. “At around 1.45 pm yesterday, he told his friends that he will join them in a few minutes. He went to his room while his friends waited for him. When 20-25 minutes passed, they went to Krishna’s room and found the door locked. They thought that he might be using headphones. They tried to call him from a window but saw his body hanging from the ceiling fan. They then broke open the door,” said Yadav.
Krishna’s body was hanging by a bedsheet. He was rushed to Kailash Hospital in Noida, where he was declared brought dead. “There are no injury marks on his body,” said Yadav.
Krishna’s suicide note, written in Telugu, was addressed to his parents. “In the note, he told his parents that they have done a lot for him. He said that committing suicide was a difficult thing to do, it was an act of courage. He asked his parents to look after his sister,” Yadav said.
“Because of vacations, he was living alone in his room. His two roommates had gone home. He had spoken to his father on Friday morning at around 8 am, and they did not find anything amiss,” he added.
